Unit 3: Play
Central Idea:
We use play to make meaningful connections and come to new understanding in our lives.
Valentine's Day Cooking Project
The children had fun making their own Valentine's day cookie. In the process we identified and measured the different ingredients together. Before using the cookie cutters to cut out shapes that we would like. We had some leftover dough so we were able to enjoy some of our own handmade cookies. They also decorated their own Valentine's baggie for their cookie. A small gift that they all wanted to share with some one they love. |
Sports Day Reflection & Preparation for our Triathlon
As we looked back at a successful Sports Day we reflected back on our feelings and some of our favorite moments from that day. We recorded our feelings and thoughts down on our reflection sheet.
We are now training hard for the upcoming Triathlon. Although we don't have a confirmed date yet it something that both the children and teacher are looking forward to.

Hula Hoop Game
The rules of the game are simple. You have to pass the hoop to your friend but without letting go of your hands. In this game we had to utilized our thinking skills as well as our communication skills. It was not an easy task, but we soon developed strategies and ways to play the game. After playing the game we discussed about our experience from play game. We then completed a reflection sheet in which we identified whether or not we we thought the game was easy or difficult and if we trust our friend or not. |
Magic Milk
In keeping with our unit on play, we are continuing to play and explore with different materials. We are becoming more knowledgeable about the properties of different liquids.
We had fun observing how the colored milk would react with the washing detergent. We were fascinated by the unique designs that this experiment created. |
Cooperative Games
In this unit we will be focusing on trust and conflict. Learning new strategies to resolve conflict and developing more trust in our friends. The Creativity children have been playing cooperative games to build up their teamwork as they work together towards a common goal.
Math - Measurement
How tall are you? The Creativity class is learning about measurement this unit. We have started off by using non-standard units of measurement to measure ourselves and our friends. We work cooperatively with our math partner to trace their bodies before measuring how tall we are.
Playing with Bubbles
The Creativity children had a bubbly time with our latest experiment on bubbles. We made our own bubble solutions and made predictions about what shapes we would be able to create. When we reflected back on the experiment, we became aware that the bubbles were not as easy to blow as we had expected but still had fun playing with it.
Playing with Oobleck
What better way to play, than to play through science. We will now be conducting a new science experiment every Thursdays afternoon. In this experiment we focused on using our senses to describe the different material and ingredient that we used. The children made some insightful comments and observation about the texture, smell, and appearance of the cornstarch. After adding water to the cornstarch, we had a blast trying hold the cornstarch as it slipped through our hands.
Toy Car Project
As part of our journey through our play unit, we shared and discussed things that we enjoyed playing with our peers. We identified some common interest and we graphed out our preference of how many people we enjoyed playing with (independently, small group, or big group).
We started our first project for this unit by constructing our own toy cars. We intially had to plan out what we wanted our car to look like. We recorded our planning and began with our construction and painting the following week. We are enthusiastic about seeing the different types and models of car we will create.

It is the Year 2014!
The Creativity class started off of our new term by decorating our own 2014 posters. We were so excited to see our friends again and had plenty of fun sharing stories from our long holiday.
We also began the tuning process into our third unit on Play, painting images of what we liked to play.
